The Musical!?

CANTERBURY TALES, Directed by Jim Corti

This was a madcap romp through a fairly odd set of take-offs on Chaucer's stories rendered in something rather like a cross between story theatre and Andrew Lloyd-Weber. I do remember the look of the production was probably the most interesting part of the whole enterprise. The costume you see me in at left was typical of the "look" for the men: skin tight sweats with pseudo-military tops. I ended up looking rather like a semi-steroidal Peter Pan in mine. Cookie's set was a huge steel construct more like an overgrown jungle jim than a Constructivist piece. Jim Corti, I remember wanted everybody to "look good," and I think the fashions of the day were rather like what we were got up in. Warehouse chic was just coming into fashion in NYC, so Cleveland was miles ahead at the time. And, my, I was thin.

I couldn't tell if the audiences really liked this one or were merely stunned by it. The strength was that we really did try our best to capture what Chaucer was after in most cases and it was very well sung. I couldn't locate any reviews in my files, so I imagine they were unmemorable or (more likely)they didn't mention me. Bizarre. Fun.
