 THE
TAMING OF THE SHREW Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival
Directed
by Russell Treyz
At
last an opportunity to work with Russ Treyz who had been in on the creation of
one of my favorite shows Cotton Patch Gospel.
To my delight, I discovered that Russ is a real actors director who lets his
actors experiment and try things and then as the opening nears, he sets the best
stuff. A great joy to work with. As this production was much more traditional
than the last one I'd been in with Drew Barr at the
helm, it was sensible to take a more traditional approach. But as always, I let
the words do as much of the work as possible. Gremio's motives are remarkably
simple: he's a lecherous old Pantalone, hence the long goatee (achieved with copious
amounts of the stuff kids use to spike their hair.) It's a little unsettling that,
with the exception of the hirsute management, I had to use no make-up.
