Home About Mr. Turney A Christmas Carol & An Evening with Dickens

A Live Solo Performance by
Emmy-Award Winner Wayne S. Turney

"I was very moved by the intimacy of your relationship to the text, the author and to Jesus! You are a theologian! It was both inspiring and enlightening and brought fresh insight to some difficulties I have had with the text--especially the 'you will always have the poor with you!' Thank you. Thank you."

See and hear the oldest Gospel come alive in your Church with this dramatic two-hour performance. Staged by award-winning director Harper Jane McAdoo, this solo performance of the King James version of Mark in its entirety is more than a recitation. It is a unique blend of storytelling and drama. The performance is an opportunity to, in Turney's words, "combine my profession with a profession of faith." Turney has brought the full range of his considerable dramatic talents to this role, traveling the country for over twelve years performing Mark in churches and theatres.

The stunning theatrical qualities of the King James version of St Mark's Gospel were first demonstrated by British Actor Alec McCowen who performed around the world more than two decades ago. Turney saw McCowen's performance at that time and was dazzled not only by the artistry of the performer but "moved and enlightened" by the clarity of the gospel in performance. Says Turney," Too often we read the Bible in short spurts and we miss the story--the context. In delving for pearls of wisdom, we miss the boat. A great deal can be learned by hearing the whole story in one sitting--seeing the sweep of Jesus' baptism, ministry, crucifixion and resurrection."

Turney's performance has been called a "life -changing experience." Said one minister's wife, "I'll never read the Bible the same way again!" A lay leader said, "I never realized how much humor there is the gospel! ...a thoroughly delightful and moving evening. I want to see it again." Said an educator, "[Turney's performance] brings home the reality of the incarnation in ways I had never imagined." Said an Episcopal Bishop, "I learned things tonight. What a blessing!"

Wrote a well-known religious broadcaster, " I don't recall any single encounter with the Word of God that more enhanced my understanding and enjoyment of Jesus than did your presentation of the Gospel according to St. Mark...Christ's wisdom, caginess, compassion, humor, indignation, graciousness, exasperation, indeed, his humanity, were so engaginly displayed during your performance that I am once again quite taken with this magnificent character and rearranging my schedule in order to carefully reread the gospels with the fresh lenses I received [at your performance.]...thank you for a blessed night."
